Can religion work in schools?
Religion always seem to be taboo.People are very sensitive whenever the topic of religion emerges. In schools it is usually downplayed so as not to offend anyone. However, all religion acknowledges right from wrong in terms of morality, cheating and misbehaviour. We usually have stories that emphasise these qualities.Using religion in schools does not mean offending or interfering with people's faith. What can be done is using the stories as activities for the children, let them read it,let them dramatise it,let them recreate it and let them enjoy it and hopefully the values will permeate their subconscious to make them better individuals. Is there a problem with that?

Religion is so much an important aspect of ones life. The fear of God is what the students do not have in them why they are behaving the way they behave. These students need to have some form of spirituality in them so they cvan have some direction.
ReplyDeleteI have suggested to them at staff meetings previously that they should time table religious education but no one took me on. It was done at primary schools I taught and it worked very suceesfully so I think that it could be given a try.
Milton, we could start by using the young adult edition of the Bible or even the stories of the Bible presented in comic form or as graphic novels. Then in terms of activities an actual visit to the Wild Fowl Trust could begin with a virtual field trip in which we compare and contrast the birds in the Bible with those in the Wild Fowl Trust (using the latter's website).
ReplyDeleteConsider the hero image as portrayed by the four Hebrew boys and the current hero image as seen through the eyes of our young adults.
These are just a few suggestions that are worth the effort.
