Boys and learning-the dilemma

In the last two decades boys have become less inclined in the academics.Girls have progressed tremendously. What is the problem? Are boys too playful, distracted or not interested.Luckily, the computer has aroused their interest. This can now be used as a strategy to bring back the boys into the academics. The wide range of activities that the computer provides as well as the attraction of pictures, music and games can be channelled to encourage them to use these same activities and modify them to suit the learning strategies. This course and by extension the Reading Program should provide the opportunity.Only time will tell.

  1. Milton, I am also passionately concerned about the boys being non-readers. However, I have found the following very helpful:
Brozo, W. G. (2002). To be a boy, to be a reader: Engaging teen and preteen boys in active literacy. Newark, DE: International Reading Association.
Frey, N. & Fisher, D. (Eds.). (2008). Teaching visual literacy: Using comic books, graphic novels, Anime, cartoons, and more to develop comprehension and thinking skills.Thousand Oaks, CA: Corwin Press.
