Technology For Reading

Technology has infiltrated all aspects of our lives, mostly in a positive manner.Reading is no exception.Furthermore, for students who may have difficulty in reading the technology can create interest and opportunities to assist these students. It is hoped that by the end of this course the learner would have embraced the value of technology to complement the previous approaches to reading.

  1. Yes, Milton, I agree with you that technology has infiltrated all aspects of our lives. Hence the reason why we, as teachers need to incorporate the use of the technology in our lessons. This, I believe, will work for the remedial reader who is averse to reading. Using the technology would get them hooked onto literacy seeing that they themselves are techno savvy and gravitate naturally to technology. So the onus is on us to be abreast of all the latest in the field and practise, practise practise so that we are not left behind. All the best to you.

  2. Milton,
I am in total agreement with you. Everywhere you turn is technology. I have also seen that books can be downloaded to their iPods and iphones so they can listen to them being read. There is also "Kindle" that does the same thing . This would help the struggling readers with pronunciation of words, intonation etc.
I think this is the direction that the Ministry of Ed should take to ensure that all the schools are equipped with these technologies so to give the students the opportunities to succeed.

  3. Milton at the risk of sounding cliched I will say that indeed technology has touched all of our lives. The mere fact that someone who is in their eighties can whip out a cell phone in a clinic in a hospital and call their loved one to come and collect them we are witnessing its use. I am amazed at the facile with which our students easily engage in its use.I am not so savvy, yet accustomed to reading my bible from a printed one, I now read online. And why you may enquire, it it because I wanted to? After doing assignments for the Med programme of courses such as this on, its easy to just read online from my yahoo account. If anyone had told me a year ago that I would be blogging online I perhaps would have scowled in their face. I see the challenge I have ahead of me in using the technology in the classroom and encouraging my colleagues to join me.

  4. I agree with you Viji that EBook is very great in teaching reading. I see it as a good technology in teaching students who are reluctant to read. I can see my boys at school enjoying doing E book. It will definitely help them in their reading as they will be involve in the creation of the material. I am truly looking forward to start using E book with my class and see what progress my students will have in reading.

  5. Hi Milton,
Technology has touched every facet of our lives.I want to emphasise that each one of us use technology everyday of our lives.Almost everyony has a cell phone whether they can read or not. Also, the child who struggles to read are sometimes able to use some of these technologies better than their literate peers. There,we need to capitalize on their interest also to help them to read.Technology is one way to do this.

I agree with your statements on your blog.
The children are using the technology out of school on a regular basis. They are learning both positive and negative things. It is up to us as teachers to utilize the technology so as to assist pupils in using it in a positive way for learning. It truly has the potential to motivate all readers to read not only the struggling readers.
